Sprint paddling is broken up into three disciplines: Kayak, Canoe, and Dragonboat. Kayaks and canoes can be subdivided into K1, K2, K4, and C1, C2, and C4. K refers to kayak, C refers to canoe, and one through four refers to the number of paddlers per boat. C15 also exists and is commonly termed War Canoe.
Sprint technique involves the rotation of the upper body in order to achieve a maximum length in which the paddle travels with a positive force through the water. This requires a strong core as it primarily involves the back, chest, abdomen, shoulders, and arms. Sprint paddling makes use of muscle strength and power, flexibility, fast reflexes, a strong cardiovascular system, and a driven mental capacity to exert one's self.
